In a nutshell
Margot List is a British/Swiss singers songwriter living in Munich, Germany. She expresses profound emotions through catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics that will give you goosebumps. Her songs take you on a journey of life's struggles and wonders. You will be laughing, crying, singing and dancing with her along the way.
Biggest musical inspiration
Margot’s biggest musical inspiration includes Ed Sheeran, Alanis Morissette,
Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Rodrigo y Gabriela.
Moving to Munich, discovering songwriting
Margot’s move to Munich came when she was deeply frustrated with her situation in London. She took a job offer, despite not knowing anybody in the city. The first year was a freeing experience for Margot. She met new people, discovered new places and started building a new life from scratch. The pandemic changed everything. She found herself alone in her flat with nobody for support. She struggled with depression. A lot of difficult and painful experiences from her past were coming to the surface. It was in this time and after starting therapy that Margot discovered she could write songs. A big release of emotions of facing the pain but also finding hope in a brighter future. Songwriting is her purpose in life and every song is a piece of her soul she is sharing with the world. Her biggest wish is that people can find meaning and comfort in the music and the lyrics.
Early life, leaving music behind
Margot started learning classical guitar at the age of 7. Interestingly nobody in the family was musical. She was awarded music scholarships to day school and Saturday school at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She stopped having music lessons at age 16 and gave up any dream of becoming a musician as she knew she needed to leave home and become financially independent. She ended up training as an actuary and worked very long hours with no time for music for many years.
Way back to music, hope for the future
Margot has now found her way back home to music. She spends every free minute singing and playing guitar. Margot is following her dream to become a full time singer songwriter. She wishes for a world in which everyone is free to live their dreams and believes in themselves to make it happen. She hopes to inspire others to do the same.
Making time for things that matter
While juggling her full time insurance job and singer songwriter dream, Margot volunteers at Refugio’s music centre for refugees in Munich every month. She teaches guitar, ukulele, singing and songwriting. Music has helped her through very difficult times in her life and she hopes she can help young people who have been through trauma to build a musical safe space for themselves. Openness and empathy towards all human beings are key values for Margot in life.
Upcoming releases
Margot's latest release My Love came out on March 29th. More songs are on the horizon thereafter.
Live gig experience
Margot plays street music regularly and has played a number of open stages at venues in Munich such as Import Export and Lost Weekend. She has played multiple times at Botanista Café Club and been booked for corporate events. She very much enjoys playing live and is keen to line up more live gig experience on bigger stages.
